Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of Terms

By downloading, installing, or using Matn, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

We may update these terms from time to time. Continued use of Matn after changes are published constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.

2. Description of the Service

Matn is a free app for reading and memorising classical Arabic texts. There are no ads or in-app purchases.

Features include reading texts, playing reference recitation where it is available, practising memorisation with on-device recognised-word tracking, progress, favourites, and optional cloud sync between devices.

3. User Accounts and Authentication

You may use Matn without creating an account. Reading and review remain available offline. Recitation tracking requires a one-time download of the Arabic recognition model. If you sign in with Cloud sync on, recordings you save are uploaded so they can be available on your other signed-in devices.

To enable cloud sync, you can sign in using email and password, Google Sign-In, or Sign in with Apple. Account authentication is handled by Firebase Authentication.

You are responsible for keeping your sign-in credentials secure. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us at hello@matn.dev.

4. User Data and Privacy

Our full Privacy Policy explains what data Matn collects, how it is stored, and your rights.

In brief: your memorisation progress, favourites, and settings are stored on your device. If you sign in and use cloud sync, selected study data is synced to Firebase Firestore and personal recordings may be stored in Firebase Storage for cross-device access. Speech recognition runs on your device by default. Separately, if you opt in to “Contribute recitation clips” in Settings, account-linked clips and limited session metrics may be uploaded to evaluate and improve speech recognition. Turning this setting off stops new uploads; it does not delete data already uploaded. You can request deletion in the app, which starts an asynchronous deletion job. Analytics and crash reporting use Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics.

5. Intellectual Property

The classical Arabic texts included in Matn are in the public domain. You are free to read, copy, and share these texts.

The app itself (including its code, design, audio recordings, and branding) is proprietary. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works from the app or its non-text assets without written permission.

6. Acceptable Use

When using Matn, you agree not to:

  • Scrape, crawl, or systematically extract data from the app or its servers
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble the app
  • Interfere with or disrupt the app’s infrastructure or other users’ access
  • Use the app for any unlawful purpose
  • Impersonate another person or misrepresent your identity
  • Circumvent any access controls or security measures

7. Termination

You may stop using Matn at any time. You can delete your account from within the app. This starts an asynchronous job to remove cloud data linked to that account; removal is complete only when the job finishes.

We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these terms or use the app in a way that could harm other users or the service. We will try to give reasonable notice where possible, but reserve the right to act immediately if necessary.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties

Matn is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. We do not guarantee that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components.

Speech recognition helps track the words Matn recognises during recitation. It is a practice aid, not a substitute for correction by a qualified teacher.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of Matn.

Matn is a free app with no revenue. Our total liability for any claim related to the service shall not exceed the amount you have paid us, which is zero.

10. Changes to These Terms

We may revise these terms at any time by updating this page. The “last updated” date at the top will reflect the most recent revision. For significant changes, we will make reasonable efforts to notify users through the app.

11. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising from or in connection with these terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
