Matn is a reading and memorisation app for classical Arabic mutun and other study texts from the Islamic sciences. The library is organised by subject, with the Arabic text at the centre of the reading view.

Use it to read, set a daily portion, review lines, and keep your place. Reference recordings play where a text has one.

Recitation tracking runs on your device and is intended for private practice. It follows the words it recognises and uses them to schedule review; it does not judge your pronunciation or tajweed, and it does not replace a teacher's correction.

What is Matn?

Matn is a free app for reading and memorising classical Arabic mutun and other study texts from the Islamic sciences. It includes reading, daily portions, review, progress tracking, and optional on-device recitation tracking.

Is Matn free?

Yes. Matn is free, with no ads and no in-app purchases. It is currently distributed through private TestFlight and Google Play internal testing, rather than a public app-store release.

Does Matn work offline?

Reading and review work offline once the app is set up, because the texts are included in the app. The recognition model, about 260 MB, downloads once, automatically on Wi-Fi or when you choose to on mobile data, then works offline. Download a text to keep its recordings for offline listening. Recordings you have played are kept too, up to 250 MB, with the texts you have not heard lately cleared first.

What texts are available in Matn?

Matn's library covers tajweed, aqeedah, hadith, Arabic language and rhetoric, fiqh, usul al-fiqh, tasawwuf, and Prophetic praise, and it grows as texts are added. Reference recordings play where a text has one.

How does spaced repetition work in Matn?

Matn schedules line review from your practice history. Lines that need more work return sooner; lines you know well are reviewed less often.

Can I record a text for Matn?

Yes, in two ways. Without an account, recite one bayt in your browser at matn.dev/help: the clip only trains and tests Matn's recognition, is never played to learners or published, and can be deleted from the same browser. With an account at matn.dev/recite, record a text you have memorised bayt by bayt, then submit a chapter or the whole text; once Matn has reviewed it, learners hear it in the app under the credit you choose. The privacy policy sets out both agreements.
